Thus the growing up from the crack in the concrete was quite difficult for the rose and symbolically growing up from the ghettos was quite difficult for the poet and would be difficult for others as well. The crack could be the opportunity that is available to all of the people but for some, it is easy to grasp while for others it is quite difficult. Crimes, scarcity, diseases, violence and other bad things are quite common in such an area. In the poem, concrete symbolizes “ Ghetto” or probably the slum area which is occupied by the poor section of people. It cannot be broken down easily and one can easily hurt himself if he tries to break it. In the first line, the poet raises a rhetorical question, “ Did you hear about the rose” drawing the reader’s attention towards a rose plant that grew from a crack in the concrete. Concrete is used in buildings and is quite hard. ![]() ![]() The poet uses a number of literary devices in the poem. ![]() The poem is quite short consisting of the single stanza that has eight lines. hard enough to become a hindrance in the way to success. It is my hope that the residents of Boyne City, Michigan, who read the story will find truth in the descriptions of this beautiful and quaint town and will understand some of the struggles and fears that a shy, inhibited, gay youth may face while growing up here. The central character of the story, Jeff Irwin, is not the author and never really existed. ![]() Many of my own feelings and experiences are included in the story of this fictitious boy, but his family and friends are all fabricated. Although the story is set in the very same northern Michigan town where I was raised, the people that I have implanted into this real-life town are not the people I knew as a young boy of fourteen. This is completely a tale of fiction, and the characters within are not in any way intended to represent any real life persons.
